Sometimes you don't have time to learn long lists of words and phrases. All you want to know are the bare essentials for communicating to get what you need, or where you need to go.

Here are the bare minimum of Malay words and phrases you need to know to survive.

Vowels:
a at the end of a word is pronounced as er as in her (ə)
ah at the end of a word is pronounced as a
e is pronounced as er as in her (ə)
é is pronounced as e (IPA e)

Consonants:
' indicates a glottal stop (ʔ)
c is pronounced as ch as in church (tʃ)
j is pronounced as j as in judge (dʒ)
k at the end of a word is pronounced as a glottal stop (ʔ)
gh is a voiced velar fricative (ɣ), a voiced form of kh
kh is pronounced as kh as in loch or Bach (x)
